In the novel The Great Gatsby, the American Dream was generally interpreted as the obtainment of everything one could want. Money did not withhold a person's desires if they were truly living the life of an American's dream in the 1920's. This was a time when many people, hoping to one day be living large, where shaken out of their blissful trances, and where forced to deal with the immense economic bubble that would soon burst. This bubble would eventually be named the Great Depression. Fitzgerald's idea of the American Dream largely differs from someone who was born in a different era. Kurt Vonnegut, who was born three years before Fitzgerald's book was published, has a separate way of addressing the idea of the American Dream. In Vonnegut's short story "Confido", a man creates an ear-piece that is essentially the little devil on your shoulder. It talks to you, and tells you things that generally compliment you, but belittle everyone else. If you have ever heard of the phrase "Keeping up with the Johnsons'", this ear-piece made you feel like the Johnsons. In this story, the talking ear-piece, otherwise known as Confido, represents the greed and need for power that everyone has inside of them. Vonnegut wrote this story in order to denounce the 1950's idea of the American Dream. As time passed and wars were fought, the American Dream changed with it.

I definitely agree with that interpretation. Fitzgerald and Vonnegut were drastically influenced by the events of their time periods and it can be seen in their work. They both shed light on the true American Dream. Vonnegut really seemed to be illustrating how the American Dream corrupted people where Fitzgerald was illustrating how the people are the ones corrupting the American Dream. Confido represented the American Dream that Vonnegurt believed instilled greed and corruption in poor and lowly individuals and truly brought out the evil in them. Confido convinced Henery that what he had wasn't enough and that he needed to be more successful than everyone else in order to achieve true happiness which he let get to his head and it ended up bring the worst out of him.
Where in the Great Gatsby it was more oriented on how personal greed and disregard of value of the wealth by the elite in society had suppressed and overshadowed the poor individuals of society. Gatsby represented the "new money" of society or essentially the American dream, and Daisy selfishly used him for attention and wealthy treatment, and in the end let him die for her mistake. Tom did they same to Myrtle. Both these individuals had essentially represented the "lowly" of society whom each had American Dreams and Tom and Daisy who were the elite of society came in and utterly ruined their lives.
