In Alice Walker's poignant collection of essays "In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens", the theme of subjugation of women of color is brought to attention. She suggests that the potential of women to express themselves fully was restrained by the shackles of slavery and sexism before and during the Reconstruction period in American history. She suggests forced pregnancies, misogyny, and unfair labor precluded black women from realizing their talent and partaking in the American Dream. Walker uses the example of Phillis Wheatley, a young writer and poet, who was trapped by the evils of slavery. Wheatley became so ill from the manual labor and pregnancies she was forced to endure that her body eventually gave out. Wheatley died as a youth and was unable to use her talents to her benefit. Walker uses her writing to assert the notion that the black women during the oppressive years in Americas history were undiscovered for the many talents and abilities they possessed due to the prejudice that existed. She refers to the women as "our mothers and grandmothers" in order to show how privileged women today are compared to their ancestors. Walker believes that the American Dream was not available to women (particularly black women) for a long period of time in American history and that certain inequalities exist to this day.

You bring up a great point Reshma, that the American Dream was not readily available for the majority of women during many years of American history. However, the American Dream is subjective and that it is different for every person. Take for example Jane from Jane Eyre. I feel that Jane obtains her American Dream by becoming independent and finding true love for herself. She is also able to marry Rochester, who is rich himself. Women of early America would be able to obtain wealth and status through marriage.

Reshma, I enjoyed your thoughts on the American Dream in "In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens", particularly because I have never heard of this story before and found it interesting. I agree with Alice Walker that for women, especially women of color, any type of American Dream is much more difficult to achieve than it is for men. Many issues that commonly affect women, such as economic and workplace inequality, sexual and domestic violence, and reproductive restrictions, can keep women from achieving their goals. For example, in America women are rarely, if at all, given paid maternity leave. This can often force women to choose between wanting to raise their children full time or keep their job and advance in their field. These ultimatums that women face can restrict them from the American Dream.
