Set in 1989, an Iowan farmer, Ray Kinsella, hears a voice saying, "If you build it, he will come". Defying odds and overcoming tribulations, this farmer is successful in building a baseball field in his backyard. With the corn in his farm being the main source of income for his family, Ray's brother in law is very against Ray building a baseball field for seemingly no reason, since Ray was the only one who heard the "voice". Ignoring his brother in law, he builds the field and soon the ghosts of the 1919 Chicago White Sox World Series players, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, come. The mysterious voice continues to give Ray vague instructions and sends him on a journey to find what he needs. In the end, Ray is able to save his farm by selling tickets for admission to see the ghosts play on his field.
The movie title literally has dreams in the title. For America baseball was the American Dream. Little boys grew up watching their favorite players and wanting to be like them or play with them. Its about always believing in yourself no matter what others say."Field of Dreams" represents the American Dream of never giving up on your dream, defying all odds, following your heart, believing in yourself, and of course playing baseball.
