In "The Accident", Dave Eggers creates an atmosphere of loneliness. Eggers blatantly states this when he explains his feelings "because you are so lonely, so lonely always, and all contact is contact, and all contact makes us so grateful we want to cry and dance and cry and cry". Eggers also uses an analogy to describe how he feels by comparing himself to a set of boxers who rest on each-others shoulders for peace. This type of writing shows, in a rather irregular way just how lonely he is. He is almost glad he got into an accident just so he could have human contact.

Ryan, I agree with you that Eggers creates a lonely atmosphere in "The Accident". Adding on to what you said, the atmosphere is developed through the narrator's desperate desire to become close to the three teenagers. "You are so lonely, so lonely always, and all contact is contact" shows how desperate he is when it comes to making friends. He is so lonely that he tries to make a relationship with people who he had almost killed, which is something that is extremely usual and unlikely. The author of "The Interlopers" creates a suspenseful and erie atmosphere by setting the story in a dark and stormy forest at night where two enemies are out to get each other. Saki also includes a brief background description of the long standing quarrel between the two families to add to tension created by the setting. The mood keeps the reader anxious as to who will make the first move when Ulrich and Georg first meet. Along with that, the exchange between Ulrich and Georg heightens the tension between the two as both men spit out comments filled with hatred and bitterness. However, after the two have been stuck under the tree for half an hour, the atmosphere shifts from dark and suspenseful to more carefree and relaxed when Georg says, "In all the countryside there are none that could hinder if we willed to make peace. I never thought to have wanted to do other than hate you all my life, but I think I have changed my mind about things too, this last half-hour. And you offered me your wineflask... Ulrich von Gradwitz, I will be your friend." This change in mood marks a drastic shift in the reader's expectations as what will happen next and also contributes to other elements of the story, such as theme and irony. After the two enemies reconcile, the reader feels more at ease and hopeful that everything will end well. However, Saki purposely creates a calm atmosphere so that there is an extra touch of surprise added to the irony at the end of the story when the wolves come to presumably devour the two men.

Ryan - I completely agree that Eggers created an atmosphere of loneliness on purpose. As a reader, I can sympathize with the person who got into the accident because he/she clearly lacks human contact and was very happy to run into the teenage boys (both figuratively and literally). The mood of loneliness makes the reader side with the person who got into the accident, which is very difficult to do since most people would dislike a person who crashed into another car and was at fault. The atmosphere affects the mood and completely changes the reader's perspective.

I agree with Ryan that he creates an air of loneliness but I also think the mood (or atmosphere) is unhinged and slightly off-kilter. He changes throughout from analytical to extremely metaphysical. Like the interlopers he finds connection in fear and loss. I also agree with Jess, that you sympathize with people you do not typically empathize with. Altogether the most important thing that occurs in the story is the push of guilt on the reader. That can mean that you read the story as slightly unhinged.

Also, the lonely mood influences the tone of the short story. It definitely makes for a much more sympathetic tone towards "you" since the author is feeling pity for the character's loneliness. With this kind of tone, the reader is much more likely to make a connection with the character since both of these techniques create a more profound message to ponder about. This is due to the impression that the story is speaking to us personally as if we caused the accident, which is only accomplished with the lonely mood and the sympathetic tone.

Although it is clear that the atmosphere of Accident is a little bit lonely, being that the narrator directly states how lonely he is, I think that at the end instead of becoming "unhinged" it becomes relaxed and peaceful. For example he says "now you are so close you feel like you share a heart," which maybe is an overstatement, but if he is as lonely as he seems who can blame him for feeling a little grateful he has a chance to be close to others. Also, he goes from being very scared of being beat up by the teenagers or made fun of, to feeling friendly and happy. He states at the end that he understands how boxers can go from being so wound up and frantic to peaceful, which shows he is not off his rocker, but relaxed and at peace and for the moment, happy.

The atmosphere is very similar to the attitudes of the main character, yourself, because it is dynamic. At the start of the story the atmosphere is apologetic as the main character knows he messed up and caused the crash. Then, it goes to a elitist atmosphere as the main character is berating the teens. Finally as the story closes the protagonist realizes how lonely he is and the atmosphere shifts once again to a lonely one.

Ryan- I believe and agree that loneliness is completely present in the accident. I also believe that other atmospheres are present. The reader gets a feeling of neglect when reading the story. Partially because it is written in first person, and partially because of the authors tone. Overall, it is very upsetting that the driver is so lonely that he feels the safest and most secure in the arms of a stranger
