In a A Separate Peace, John Knowles uses foreshadowing to emphasize the gradual shift from childhood to adulthood. From the very beginning Knowles, hints at two important places in the book, the stairs and the tree. This alerts the reader to pay attention to the two events occurring at this location both which are the bildungsroman epiphany moment and the inciting incident respectively. Aside from these two events, foreshadowing reveals adult themes in otherwise childlike events. For example, when Finny and Gene go to the beach, Finny says that Gene is his best friend. This foreshadows the jealously, which leads Gene to 'jounce' Finny out of the tree. It also reveals a more adult theme as Gene cannot respond to this because he has more complex, adult feelings now, unlike Finny who has a blind childish trust of Gene.
While foreshadowing can be overt, Knowles also uses subtle foreshadowing. A great example of this is in character names. Leper actually translates to a person who has been cast out from society, for moral, physical or social reasons. This foreshadows Lepers dishonorable discharge from the military, in the end Leper becomes a social Leper. Likewise Brinker's name foreshadows the enlistment he doesn't follow through on and his role in the trial for Finny. The brink is the edge of something, when Brinker threatens to enlist, he right on the edge of enlistment when he decides not to. 'On the brink' can be synonymous with a crucial turning point the fact that Brinker organized the late night trial in the auditorium, shows that moment to be a turning point in the story.
What do you guys think? What other examples of foreshadowing are there?
